He aha nei te kaupapa o Te Reo? What is Language about?

Ko te reo te tuakiri, ko te reo tōku ahurei, ko te reo te oranga  Language is identity, it is culture, it is sustenance

Ko te reo te kākahu o te whakaaro, te huarahi i te ao tūroa  Language is the cloak of all thought, the pathway to the world

Mā te reo ka mōhio, mā te mōhio ka mārama.     By language it is known, by knowing it is understood.

Language is the vessel from which all areas of human life are transmitted and communicated – whether verbally or through body language, symbols and gestures. An exchange of words is the difference between ignorance and understanding, oppression and liberation. Although Te Kura o Te Teko students have two living languages in which learning and teaching is conveyed, the key purpose of learners remains the same – regardless of the language of instruction; to think, explore, investigate, evaluate, succeed and achieve in life goals and beyond.

Combined with a distinctive view of their world, learning and teaching will be conducted at Te Kura o Te Teko with a unique approach that helps to encapsulate our students in a curriculum based on tuakiritanga – cultural identity and tikanga – lore, in accordance with our iwi, Ngāti Awa ki Rangitaiki.

At Te Kura o Te Teko, mainstream English (Taha Auraki) is taught and learned in the English language, encouraging some use of Te Reo Māori at a ratio of 31-50% Te Reo; using English as the main language of instruction. Identity, traditions, customs and lore will be transmitted to our students through the English language, to ensure that students are able to learn cultural values and traditions that underpin educational pursuit, through their prescribed language of instruction.

Mainstream Māori (Taha Rumaki) which uses Te Reo Māori as the language of instruction is done so at a ratio of 80-100%. Similar to Taha Auraki, students learning through Te Reo Māori will be privy to the same learning opportunities as Taha Auraki with the exception of the language used to instruct and communicate.
